Of Thoughts And Expressions

Thoughts are borne in the wings of tumult. When the sea gets boisterous and the tattooed sails give way the helmsman gives up the wheel and relishes the fury that is so beautiful and subtle. He bows his head down in obeisance and with folded arms he whispers into the howling wind - "What wrong have I done that You show your wrath unto me?". And assuredly he gets his reply. He is the source and destination of the question. The problems arise and subside in the mind. And it is through this constant questioning that thoughts, myriads spout out from the heart of the nature. Expressions on the other hand are the superfluous exposition of the thoughts. The mind expounds all that arise and assimilates them in layers. Thoughts that are old are vaulted in memory and is found spouting out in solitude. Rabindranath Tagore says that solitude is in the mind. Expressions both young and old bring joy and posses the power to instigate imagination. Words are dead and it cannot touch anything living said U.G. Krishnamurthy. But what they do is antagonize the sense of creativity and this has the power to touch only that is living, only that lives and rends the palisade of corpus observations stocked in our memory.

Expressions are myriad like the choices of the brush to the artist. But the canvas is set and waits for us to fill them up.

Transient Reality

Like the fresh green leaves

Sprouting out of the tree in the dawn of life

Young and tender they lift their heads

Knowing not what to do

Curiously enough they grow

Constantly dancing to the tunes of the wind

Not knowing, not aware

But still dancing

And in those long hot days

When the winds seem to have been banished

The leaf lies still

Waiting for the enchanting winds

Lifelessly hanging on

As it slowly ages

Telling itself that it is indeed alive

And that the winds, they would come

To vanquish the wrath of the sun

Off the face of the earth

Only the warmth would remain

The rains, they would come

To quench their thirst and to breed new life

Then at last all its prayers come to being

The winds blew warmly

The rains flew down gently

The leaf did dance till evermore

In its prime, the leaf slowly faced the truth

Its time had indeed come and it frowned

Withered away into the grounds

It fell from the tree

Like so many of its kind

But the tree did remain

Not wavered by the winds

Unfazed by the heat

Unrelenting to the storm

Its deep roots sunk in

The tree is the giver of the life

The tree is the life

The tree only remains

The Chemical Generation

A megalomaniacal chemical generation

From the free spirit of the then chemical generation

With just a word in common

With absolutely no thought in common

Freedom they spoke

Freedom we cried

But light-years between the two

Uncertain were the times

Renegation became the air

The fight was on

Young were the ideologies

Now was in sync with only now

No past, no future

Just the uncertain now

Slowly fading into the blissful reality

Eager eyes and open minds

And the ideas they flow

New thoughts, stranger philosophies

Problems came

And with them their solutions

The patternised now

With more focus on the future

With more records of the past

And the illusion of time still prevails

Have a problem?

Know your neighbor first

Ask him later

A land of strangers and foes

All we see is hatred and animosity

Whatever happened to humanity?

Love thy neighbor, they said

Yet do not trust them, they say

Have a gun, they say

And then urge us to pray for peace

The white doves are free to fly

Their numbers ever depleting

Oh! We forgot everything about hunting

Shoot to thrill and learn self defense

But what are we ourselves defending from

Now I see the reasons for more suicides

All we do well is talk

Talk about past invasions

Talk about future developments

With surplus money flowing into wars

Kill ‘em all is the slogan

The picture is hazy

This is no purple haze, Jimi

Just more manic depression, Jimi

Just more ‘machine guns’

Our dreams to fly sky high

Yeah what about them?

We do fly; we fly to drop them bombs

We fly higher to drop bigger bombs

In space with the entire world in view

It is all doomed

Is this globalization?

The air covers the earth

The water sustains life with it

Mustard gas in the air

Oil in the sea

Our seas turn into toxic waste

Our lands are slowly turning into gas chambers

We can’t blame it on the Nazis this time around, Joe

We can’t bomb Japan

We just rot and feel the reek of hatred

Slowly but surely

In our minds

In our bodies

We are the cause

We are the victims

We are the chemical generation

World wide genocide.

Rain

Into the black clouds I swim

To become one with sorrow

As I come down

Like a rain that delights

Never the tornado that destroys

Just to see your face shimmer

To be dried up again.

But that moment I saw

The warmth for which I longed

Even though I’ve now vanished

I’ll come down again to you

Ghost

A drifter

That is what I am

Gently carried by the wind that sways

One with it I pass through without a glitch

Swirl around you as you walk

The feel that I am indeed around

As I touch your skin, I assure

Tried to catch me

And you got nothingness

Wanting desperately to find something tangible

You tried harder

Just in vain

And just the haunting remains

Yet I remained

To be sensed, to be touched

To be felt but never to be bottled in

Embraced my warmth

And you knew I were

Yet felt so far away

But there I was

In your delirium, in your reveries

Ever closer to your skin

And you failed to touch me

You failed to feel

You even failed to realize

Trusting only what you saw

And in those that stared back

You’re lost

Placing your trust in those only tangible

You wanted never to

Lose the feel

The feel for desire and lust

You knew there was something more

Somehow discarded

Like the garment that you wore

Abandoned, banished from memory

Only to be later searched for

You looked everywhere

But there I was

And everywhere

That you ever were

Tattered and torn your heart

Sang a lachrymose to me

Yet there I was

And you never saw

Watching you die

I could stay cold no more

The winds they did die

Never tried too hard

Never held onto you

An empty jar I was

A lid that you placed to protect

Still had you finding me more empty

But there I was

Tried hard and could never see

I am the wind

I still touch your skin

Blind Frenzy

A forced dream

A silent reverie

Cuts across your mind

Like a flash of light in the dark

The light?

Is it the warmth of familiarity?

Like the eider down to your mind

Or is it the fear of the cold, lonely nights?

With none to confide into

You feel your bones shiver

Is it the night or is it fear?

When all you can do is sense

When all you can ever see is what you’ve never before

When all you can ever think of is grotesque and horrid

Like some monster lurking in the depths of the shadows

With no light

Just shadows and more darkness

The monster is now by your side

As you feel the icy touch run down your spine

Just delirium, just delirium

As your heart races

Pumping more blood through your veins

And then the sudden silence

The silence that remains.

A Hypocritical Getaway

Another deep breath

And you exhale the pain

The sorrows and miseries from your heart

Is it just a let out?

So momentary

So temporary

So little

Nothing real

Hash it again to hash away those bitter tears

Another deep breath

Into your head it goes

In search of more pain

To liberate you from this hell that you’re living

You stop to think

Your thought broken by your diminishing aid

Wishing it could stay with you longer

Hash it one more time to hash all those reminiscences

All that was good and all that was bad

All that you ever wanted

All that you never wanted

All you see is all you have

Take another look at it and you see it shrink

Fearing the worst you take another quick drag

And now it’s all over

For you and for it

You throw it away and with it your charm

Now you think it’s all over

As you get back to yourself

Another clean breath

Everything comes back again

All those tears ever shed

All those words ever shed

One more breath

And you are sad again
